Sometimes I hate the "fine arts world." I think a well crafted painting has merit even without a dark or contrived meaning behind it.

Hi Jill! We went to school together at UWRF. Have you used the iPhone app for CC usage. It's amazing. If you need more info shoot me an email! Your work is stunning!

Excel is the easiest way for me to keep my list organized. Works well well when you need to hand it off to the mailing house, printer, gallery or when merging with other artist's lists for events. It's kind of the universal program that others would need from you so that they can work with it. And you can sort by zip code! Best of luck!

Hi Jill, One of the biggest reasons for businesses failure is lack of marketing. Though it can be tedious, hard copy mail is an important backup to your digital mailings. Emails are easily deleted and forgotten. A lovely postcard featuring art will be displayed on a bulletin board over a desk, the refrigerator, affixed to a calendar, etc. I use Excel to compile contact lists that include a broad range of information including mailing addresses, email address, phone number etc. I use the label option through Word and maintain an ongoing snail mail list (which is easy to add and update). Very simple to print off labels and affix to your marketing material. This may be the time to find someone who can help you with the administrative end of your business. Good luck!

Too funny! Also a Dutch girl and I facebooked earlier this year about the dreaded AS:

The Artist Statement
by Laurie Landry Hand-Carved Pottery on Tuesday, January 25, 2011 at 11:16pm

Last week I was in a panic. An art gallery had left me a phone message. They were looking for my paperwork and wondering if I had sent it in. Urgh, paperwork! Truth be told I had yet to even open the packet that they had sent me 2 months prior. Don't get me wrong, I have no problem filling out pertinent information. It is the Artist Statement that I so dread!

It's the blah, blah, big words, try to sound important, intelligent and creative that I have a hard time with.

I don't have a pedigree or a college degree. Not to say that I haven't been shown the ropes by some awesome teachers at my local art center.
I'm a mutt. Much like my dog Chloe, I enthusiastically run through life doing what I like to do with as much gusto as I can muster.
To anyone that would ask me when I was a child: "I'm going to be an artist when I grow up."

So how is that I do what I do?
My art keeps me sane. It satisfies my curiosities. It takes me on adventures. Clay teaches me patience. Its' process calms me. It has allowed me to meet cool people and make really good friends.

What inspires me and where do I get my ideas?
Everything and everywhere. I'm a highly absorbent sponge.
The nature that is all around me is my inspiration.
The farm fields, woods, rolling hills, marsh, old oak trees, plants and flowers, bugs, butterflies, birds and my pets fuel my imagination.

Neither eloquent or flashy, pretty basic, my Artist Statement (see above if you missed it).

By the way the art gallery packet that I was all nutty about: needed me to fill out the standard pertinent information forms and sign a contract. They said I could mail an Artist Statement along if I wanted to!

I like your work. It has an interesting fluidity. The Cafe Wren is a great venue! In addition, if your photo of yourself is accurate, you are as beautiful as your artwork!

Thanks for saying this, Jill. I can't believe how often people don't realize artists pay to have a space at the art fairs plus that they have to pay to apply to be juried in. And, there are no guarantees...you can get into a show for several years and then rejected the next year. Some shows are $800 and up now. That's a lot of work to sell just to cover your costs. Definitely support local and handmade if you want us to still be around making beautiful things!
