Artist’s Statement

My paintings are made in layers using several mediums. I begin with a layer of acrylic paint, then I work with water soluble oils, and lastly use oil pastels. The piece is then finished by several layers of spray treatment. All pieces are done on canvas that stands 1.5″ out from the wall when hanged. If I choose to frame the piece, I use black wood floater frames.

The subjects of my paintings are recognizable and fairly common, but my colors, lines and abstraction creates a dreamlike, energizing layer to these common subjects. I tend to paint plants and animals merely because I am a person who finds a sense of peace in all things outdoors.

Also, my family has had a huge influence on my subjects. I have grandparents from Holland who farmed and grew amazing flower beds, a florist and master-gardening mother, a stepfather with an affection for prairies, and an animal-loving, outdoorsman dad.

The purpose of my work is very simple. I hope that when looking at my paintings, viewers can steal a peaceful moment in the midst of a typical high-stress, fast moving day.
